White House condemns Kenya attack

The White House condemned on Thursday the attack on a Kenyan university that killed close to 150 people.

“We extend our deep condolences to the families and loved ones of all those killed in this heinous attack, which reportedly included the targeting of Christian students,” said press secretary Josh Earnest in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers also are with the many injured. The United States is providing assistance to the Kenyan Government, and we will continue to partner with them as well as with others in the region to take on the terrorist group al-Shabaab.”

Authorities said that the attackers from the terrorist group al-Shabaab stormed the Garissa University College campus, took hostages and reportedly looked for students who were not Muslim.

A hundred and forty-seven people were killed, including four attackers. Kenyan forces fought with attackers throughout the day and eventually trapped them in a single dormitory, according to The New York Times.

Al-Shabab, which is based in Somalia, claimed responsibility for the attack in radio message, the Times reported.
