Cruz says Obama’s Iran plan ‘doomed to failure’

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) on Sunday accused President Obama of trying to “circumvent” the Senate in his efforts to strike a nuclear deal with Iran.

“The Obama administration’s effort to end-run Congress and go to the U.N. is an effort that’s doomed to failure because the Constitution provides how law is made in this country,” Cruz said in an interview with John Catsimatidis on the New York radio show The Cats Roundtable.

{mosads}The newly declared GOP presidential candidate said he agrees with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has been one of the fiercest critics of the framework.

Cruz, who sits on the Senate Armed Services Committee, described the deal as “a historic mistake.” He echoed Netanyahu’s fears that lifting sanctions on Iran would pave the way for the country to acquire nuclear weapons.

Still, Cruz fell short of promising to stand against the deal in Congress.

“If it is a bad deal that undermines U.S. national security, I hope the Senate will reject the deal,” he said.

Democrats on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, including Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), made appearances on morning shows Sunday to declare support for the deal. Sen. Dianne Feinstein (Calif.), the top Democrat on the Intelligence Committee, also voiced her support.

Several leaders in Congress, including Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), are now demanding to review the deal before the final negotiations are cemented in June.

In his own round of Sunday show interviews this weekend, Netanyahu pressed U.S. lawmakers to reject the deal, which he said threatens the existence of Israel.
