Statue of Liberty evacuated
The Statue of Liberty has been evacuated due to security concerns Friday afternoon, according to multiple media reports.
NBC News 4 New York is reporting that the evacuation stems from a suspicious package. It adds that the NYPD bomb squad and EMS workers are heading to Liberty Island, where the giant statue sits, as tourists are leaving the area.
According to CNN, someone phoned in a bomb threat about a package stored in a locker on the island.
All tourists have been evacuated and the bomb squad is moving in, according to a tweet from the New York Police Department’s 1st Precinct Captain Mike Iocco.
