Clinton: China ‘trying to hack into everything’

Former secretary of State Hillary Clinton is accusing China of stealing massive amounts of government data and warned that the U.S. is at constant risk of cyberattacks from the country.

{mosads}”They’re also trying to hack into everything that doesn’t move in America … stealing huge amounts of government information all looking for an advantage,” Clinton said at a campaign stop in New Hampshire on Saturday. “Make no mistake, they know they’re in competition, and they’re gonna do everything they can to win.”

Clinton didn’t directly blame China for the massive data breach at the Office of Personnel Management that shook the government last month, but her words are sharper than what has so far come out of the White House.

James Clapper, the Director of National Intelligence, has not publicly blamed China for the hack into millions of Americans’ personal data but said they’re the “leading suspect” in a cyber espionage scheme with the aim of building a comprehensive database on U.S. federal workers.

“I want to see a peaceful rise for China,” Clinton said. “I worked very hard on that as secretary of State; I will continue to do so. But we also have to be fully vigilant that China’s military is growing very quickly, and they are establishing military installations that again threaten countries we have treaties with, like the Philippines, because they are building on contested property.”
