All-clear given at Walter Reed
Multiple agencies responded Monday to a report of a shot fired at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., but authorities found no evidence of gunfire after an hours-long lockdown and search.
{mosads}Montgomery County police tweeted just before 2 p.m. that officers had stopped the investigation. The original report came in shortly before 11 a.m. Monday, they said.
The call was pinpointed to a 20-story building on the campus, according to police Capt. Paul Starks, a member of the force in Montgomery County, a suburb of Washington, D.C.
No injuries have been reported and police have found “no evidence of any kind” there was a shooting, the captain said. He also said police were not searching for a suspect.
“Given the times we live in and this facility, we wanted to ensure that while we didn’t have any indication at the time, except for the call, we wanted to be able to set up a perimeter and make things safe for the thousands of people on this campus,” Starks said of the police response.
Federal agencies involved in the response include the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; the FBI; the Secret Service; U.S. Customs and Border Protection; and the Department of Defense.
The incident comes four days after a report of an active shooter at Washington’s Navy Yard prompted a lockdown there and swarm of authorities.
