Sen. Nelson to undergo prostate cancer surgery
Sen. Bill Nelson (D-Fla.) announced late Thursday that he will undergo surgery to remove prostate cancer.
Doctors found the cancer early during a routine medical exam, according to his office, and scans showed it was not spreading to other areas. He was not exhibiting any symptoms.
Nelson, 72, said the diagnosis would not affect his decision to run for reelection in 2018, according to a statement sent to media. He will undergo surgery Monday in Washington.
“I’ve been blessed with good health, which has allowed me the great privilege of public service — and I look forward to continuing serving our country and Florida,” he said in a statement.
A member of the Senate since 2001, Nelson recently showed off his physical fitness, completing 46 push-ups last month after losing a Stanley Cup bet.
Nelson is the second senator to recently announce he has prostate cancer. Last month, Sen. Angus King (I-Maine), 71, underwent surgery after being diagnosed during an annual physical.
