Kirk: Iran deal ‘greatest appeasement since Chamberlain’

Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) said Tuesday that President Obama’s nuclear deal with Iran recalls Neville Chamberlain’s appeasement of Adolf Hitler before World War II.

Kirk, who faces a tough reelection battle, compared the new pact to failed diplomacy with the Nazis during a radio interview.

{mosads}“This is the greatest appeasement since Chamberlain gave Czechoslovakia to Hitler,” he told host Barry Armstrong of “The Financial Exchange” on WRKO in Boston. “He is doing this because of his very poor understanding of history and what happened to Neville Chamberlain.”

“The key lesson of the 1930s is that appeasement leads directly to war,” Kirk added.

The Illinois senator additionally argued that the deal’s implications endanger people in the Middle East.

“This agreement condemns the next generation to cleaning up a nuclear war in the Persian Gulf,” Kirk said. “It condemns our Israeli ally to further conflict with Iran.”

“The reason why there is an agreement is because the president of the United States will arrange for over $100 billon to be refunded to the Iranians and we will get more nukes, more terrorists, more irresponsibility from Iran,” he said.

“This is a huge victory for the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Kirk added.

The White House announced a historic deal with Iran to limit its nuclear weapons research on Tuesday. It would put new restrictions on Iran’s nuclear energy capabilities in exchange for economic sanctions relief.

Congress now has 60 days to review the final draft’s details.

Kirk said on Tuesday that he is “certainly voting on the resolution of disapproval” against the deal.

“The president will make this a viciously partisan issue, leading most Democrats to stand with the Iranians and hopefully losing the next election on this point,” he said.

Obama vowed on Tuesday that he would veto any legislation undermining the final Iran deal.
