US suspects ISIS used chemical weapons
U.S. officials believe the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) used chemical weapons in an attack on Kurdish forces in Iraq earlier this week.
“We have credible information that the agent used in the attack was mustard [agent],” a senior U.S. official said, according to the report in The Wall Street Journal.
{mosads}Intelligence agencies believe ISIS could have acquired the chemical weaponry in Syria. The Syrian government said it had destroyed its chemical weapons stockpile in 2013, although inspectors were never able to confirm the claim.
“That makes the most sense,” the senior official said.
The Assad regime in Syria also admitted to having deadlier nerve agents than mustard gas in its reserves, such as sarin and VX.
