Christie slams Trump-Bush ‘food fight’
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie on Thursday slammed the jousting between fellow Republican presidential candidates Jeb Bush and Donald Trump, suggesting the public has bigger problems.
“We have Donald Trump and Jeb Bush going back and forth in a juvenile food fight with each other, one volley back and forth to the other on all personal stuff,” Christie said on Fox News’s “America’s Newsroom.”
{mosads}”Meanwhile, the American people remain angry and frustrated at Congress, angry and frustrated with the President, concerned about their own lives,” Christie said.
Bush is attempting to retake his position as the front-runner in the crowded GOP race by attacking Trump, who has dominated polls since his entry to the race in June. It’s a gamble for Bush, something several GOP rivals like Christie, who has remained in the lower tier of GOP candidates, have shied away from.
The latest jabbing between Bush and Trump erupted when the former Florida governor took several shots at the real estate tycoon in Spanish while campaigning in Miami this week. Trump responded by suggesting that Bush “should really set the example by speaking English while in the United States.”
“I think he should speak whatever language he wants to speak,” Christie said when pressed on Fox whether Bush should speak Spanish in the U.S.
“I only speak English, Martha, so for me I don’t have an option. This is the only language you’re going to hear me speaking,” Christie told host Martha MacCallum.
“Do you really think the American people care about this back and forth between he and Donald? I really don’t,” Christie said, referring to other issues such as illegal immigration he said should be the focus instead.
“This is about two people running for president who are looking to pick on each other every day and make personal, petty back and forths,” Christie said, rejecting that the jabbing was about multiculturalism.
“Jeb Bush from Manchester this morning wasting everybody’s time on ‘Good Morning America’ carping about this, Donald tweeting about it,” Christie said, trailing off. “They should stop being self-consumed and start talking about the American people.”
Bush’s communications director acknowledged Christie’s remarks on Twitter:
1. Jeb gets attacked for being bilingual
2. Christie asked if that's appropriate
3. Christie attacks Jeb for doing a TV interview…on TV
