Scalia to lie in repose at SCOTUS

Late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia’s body will lie in repose at the Supreme Court Friday, ahead of a Saturday funeral.

The Supreme Court announced Tuesday that a public viewing of Scalia’s body will take place in the Great Hall of the Supreme Court from 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday. A private ceremony at the Supreme Court will start at 9:30 a.m.

{mosads}Services for Scalia will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, the court announced late Tuesday. The mass will be open to friends and family members. The burial will be done in private.

Scalia died unexpectedly Saturday while on a hunting trip in Texas. The 79-year-old justice was one of the court’s most conservative members and the longest-serving member of the current bench.

The Supreme Court announced Tuesday it would drape a black wool crepe on Scalia’s chair and over the bench directly in front of his seat as a memorial. The flags on the court’s front plaza will also fly at half-staff for 30 days in Scalia’s honor.

Former Chief Justice William Rehnquist was the last justice to lie in repose at the court, in 2005, the NPR report said.
