Lawmaker’s brother killed in Minnesota storm
The brother of Rep. Tim Walz (D-Minn.) was killed Sunday night when violent storms swept through northern Minnesota.
{mosads}Craig Walz, a high school chemistry and math teacher in St. Charles, was killed while camping with his son and another father-son pair in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness near the Canadian border, according to local reports.
His son, Jacob, suffered “multiple injuries” in the incident and is currently hospitalized, according to the Rochester Swim Club, for which Craig Walz was a volunteer.
“It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Craig Walz,” the club posted on its Facebook page. “Craig was a great father, teacher and Orca parent for a number of years and he will be greatly missed.”
Though local authorities have not released specific details on the incident, local station Fox 21 reported Walz was hit by a tree felled in high winds.
Tim Walz has represented Minnesota’s southern-most district since 2007. Before coming to Congress, he was a teacher like his brother.
