Russian town wants to name street for Donald Trump
President-elect Donald Trump has boasted about the many buildings and products that bear his name. Now, he could add a Russian street to that list.
Residents of Ryazan, a town about 125 miles southeast of Moscow, are circulating a petition to rename Godless Street — a relic of the Soviet era — to Donald Trump Street. The petition has already received nearly 300 signatures, the petition’s creator, Sergey Bizyukin, told CNN.
“Some saw it as a joke and signed because it was fun, some stood for normalization of US-Russia ties, and some signed because they don’t like the name of Godless Street,” Bizyukin said. In a play on Trump’s campaign slogan, “Make America Great Again,” Bizyukin has given his petition the slogan “Make Ryazan great again.”
{mosads}Bizyukin said he wants to use Trump’s high approval in Russia to promote the idea of warming relations between the two countries. Trump has expressed a desire to foster better relations with Russia, and has spoken fondly of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
But that relationship has come under scrutiny after the U.S. intelligence community revealed allegations that Russia hacked the Democratic National Committee and other Democratic organizations, as well as the email account of Hillary Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta, and provided those documents to WikiLeaks in an attempt to influence the outcome of the presidential election in favor of Trump.
