Trump: ‘Happy Cinco de Mayo!’

President Trump on Friday recognized Cinco de Mayo, extending “warmest wishes” to those celebrating the holiday. The White House did not host a Cinco de Mayo celebration, breaking a 16-year tradition.

“On Cinco de Mayo, we commemorate the heroic victory of the Mexican Army over the invading forces of Napoleon III at the Battle of Puebla and pay tribute to the proud Mexican heritage it exemplifies,” Trump said in a statement.

{mosads}Vice President Mike Pence highlighted the “many contributions to the life of this nation” from those with Mexican heritage on Thursday at a Cinco de Mayo reception held at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building adjacent to the White House.

In his statement, Trump said he honored “the Mexican-Americans whose fighting spirit and patriotism have been influential in shaping the character of our great Nation.”

He concluded: “Melania and I hope everyone enjoys the festivities. Happy Cinco de Mayo!”
