Oliver Stone pans Megyn Kelly over Putin interview

Controversial filmmaker Oliver Stone on Wednesday blasted NBC host Megyn Kelly for her interview with Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying her performance was proof that Putin “knew his stuff and she didn’t.”

Stone, who is producing his own documentary of the Russian leader, complimented Kelly’s appearance and questioning, but trashed the “machine-gun like” pace of the interview.

“I think she was attractive and she asked hardball questions, but she wasn’t in position to debate or counter him, because she didn’t know a lot of things,” Stone said in an interview with StarTribune.

Stone’s comments were quickly rebuked by a statement from NBC News president Noah Oppenheim, who told StarTribune that “no one here is interested in Oliver Stone’s unsolicited thoughts on Megyn Kelly’s appearance or his ill-informed opinion of her journalism.”

Oppenheim continued, saying “but so long as we’re offering each other professional feedback, please let him know I don’t think he’s made a decent movie since the early ’90s.”

Despite Stone’s criticism, he says that his documentary won’t feature the same kind of hard-hitting questions.

“I’m not a journalist,” Stone said. “I’m a filmmaker and I was taking a different approach.”

{mosads}When asked about the purpose of his film, Stone said that “it’s crucial for the United States to understand another point of view.”

“I’m interested in preventing a further deterioration in relations,” he explained.

Stone’s documentaries often carry controversy with them. His previous documentary on Russia examines the invasion of Ukraine, told from the Russian perspective. He has also filmed documentaries that showcase dictators like Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez and Cuba’s Fidel Castro in positive lights.
