Dem lawmaker: Trump should stop sabotaging Russia investigation
Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) said Tuesday that President Trump needs to let Congress and the FBI continue their investigations amid rumors that the president is considering firing the investigation’s special counsel, Robert Mueller.
“You have to stoop pretty low to start impugning the integrity of Bob Mueller,” Swalwell told MSNBC’s Greta Van Susteren on Tuesday.
“The president has done a masterful job in disrupting our investigation and the FBI’s investigation with the firing of the director,” Swalwell said referencing the firing of former FBI Director James Comey. “It seems like he keeps trying to delay and disrupt our honest efforts to get to the bottom of what happened.”
{mosads}”Before we can make any conclusions, we just need the ability with him out of the way to start interviewing these witnesses,” he said.
Pressed by Van Susteren on why the probe is taking so long, Swalwell said he wants the House’s investigation to continue “as fast as possible,” but that witnesses are intentionally making that harder.
“Some witnesses have suggested that they want to come in [to testify] but they don’t want to give us the documents,” Swalwell said. “Greta, that would be like a doctor examining a patient but only making an analysis based on what the patient says.”
Swalwell has been a top critic of Trump and his administration over their handling of the Russia investigation. Last week, he ripped Trump for a “clownish” Rose Garden speech in which Trump refused to say whether he had “tapes” of his conversation with Comey.
In March, Swalwell, who is on the House Intelligence Committee, was one of the top critics of committee Chairman Devin Nunes (R-Calif.), whom he accused of acting like he was involved in a “coverup” with the White House.
