Delaware pool where Biden worked as lifeguard named after him
A public swimming pool in Wilmington, Del., where Joe Biden once worked as a lifeguard has been renamed after the former vice president.
Biden on Monday attended the renaming ceremony for the Joseph R. Biden Sr. Aquatic Center in his adopted hometown, The News Journal reported.
Biden said he credits his time as a lifeguard — at what was then known as Prices Run Pool — for broadening his perspective on race relations. He was the only white lifeguard there in 1962.
“I owe you all,” Biden said. “I owe this neighborhood. I learned so, so much.”

{mosads}Biden said that he wanted to work at the pool, located in a predominantly black neighborhood, to “get more involved.”
“I’d turn on the television and see and listen to Dr. [Martin Luther] King, but I didn’t know any black people,” he said. “So, I wanted to work here,” he said.
“I’ve received an awful lot of wonderful honors all my career. The greatest honor is serving you for so long,” Biden said. “But this does mean more to me than anything that’s happened.”
