St. Louis to remove Confederate statue

The city of St. Louis says it will remove a Confederate monument by the end of the week.

The 32-foot monument, which depicts the Angel of the Spirit of the Confederacy over a family sending a soldier to war, will be dismantled and stored until a new location for it can be found, Reuters reported Monday.

The monument is being removed as part of an agreement between the city, the Missouri Civil War Museum and other parties. A lawsuit filed earlier this month stopped the city’s initial attempt to remove the statue.

{mosads}”We wanted it down,” St. Louis Mayor Lyda Krewson said, according to Reuters.

The statue was defaced in the past with red paint and the phrase “Black Lives Matter.”

The monument is located on Confederate Drive, a street that also might be renamed.

St. Louis is the latest city to remove a Confederate statue. New Orleans removed four statues last month, and the mayor of Baltimore said she was considering removing Confederate monuments from the city.
