Professor wrongly identified as Charlottesville marcher

A professor at the University of Arkansas was incorrectly identified as one of the marchers at the “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Va., The New York Times reported on Monday.

The mistake was detailed in a report by the Times about social media users seeking to identify those who were photographed attending the rally.

Kyle Quinn runs a lab at the university and was misidentified as a bearded man at the rally wearing a shirt that said “Arkansas Engineering.”

The mistake brought him an onslaught of vulgar messages on social media, including posts revealing his family’s home address and calls for him to lose his job.

{mosads}“You have celebrities and hundreds of people doing no research online, not checking facts,” Quinn told the newspaper. “I’ve dedicated my life to helping all people, trying to improve health care and train the next generation of scientists, and this is potentially throwing a wrench in that.”

Social media users since Saturday have worked to identify individuals who attended the white nationalist rally in Virginia, which was held to protest the removal of a Confederate statue.

One person died and many others were injured after a vehicle rammed into a group of peaceful counterprotesters at the rally.

A 20-year-old man, who police say perpetrated the attack, has been charged with second-degree murder, failure to stop in an accident that resulted in death and malicious wounding.
