Port Arthur mayor: ‘Our whole city is underwater’

The mayor of Port Arthur, Texas, said early Wednesday that his entire city “is underwater” but that crews would continue conducting rescue missions in the wake of Tropical Storm Harvey.

“Our whole city is underwater right now but we are coming!” Mayor Derrick Freeman wrote on Facebook. “If you called, we are coming. Please get to higher ground if you can, but please try stay out of attics.”

{mosads}The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office has asked any individuals looking to be rescued to “hang a signal such as a sheet out of your window” to alert authorities.

Port Arthur, which is east of Houston and sits on Sabine Lake, is one of many cities battling the devastating flooding caused by Harvey, which first made landfall Friday as a category 4 hurricane.

At least 30 people have died from the flooding as of Wednesday, according to The New York Times.
