Dennis Rodman: ‘Things can happen’ if Trump reaches out to Kim Jong Un
Former NBA star Dennis Rodman on Wednesday encouraged President Trump to reach out to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, saying that “things could happen.”
“If the president even tries to reach out for Kim, it would be a great possibility things could happen,” Rodman said during an appearance on Good Morning Britain.
“If they could just sit down and have some kind of mutual conversation … and just start a dialogue, I think that’ll open a door just a little bit.”
Host Piers Morgan inquired about Rodman’s relationship with the reclusive nation’s leader. Rodman has visited Kim on several occasions, calling him a “friend for life.”
{mosads}”My whole mission and my whole goal was to bring sports, to bring connection, to North Korea. I’ve always said that. I’m not a politician at all. Not at all. I’ve always said that from day one,” Rodman said.
He added of his relationship with Kim: “I basically hang out with him all the time, we laugh, we sing karaoke, we do a lot of cool things together. We ride horses, we hang out, we go skiing, we hardly ever talk politics and that’s the good thing about that.”
Rodman, who appeared multiple times on “Celebrity Apprentice” when Trump hosted the show, brought a copy of the president’s book “The Art of the Deal” with him during his latest trip to North Korea in June.
Rodman chuckled during the interview when the British TV host asked Rodman if Kim was a “lunatic who will blow the whole world up” or is just fighting for his own self-preservation.
“For many Americans, this is not a laughing matter,” Morgan said, pointing out the government’s oppression of its own people and its recent ballistic missile and nuclear tests.
“Explain to us why you don’t think he’s a danger and a threat? Because you clearly don’t. What is it about his character that you think is reassuring?” Morgan asked.
“I’m not defending the marshall of North Korea, I’m not defending him, I’m not defending the fact that what he does is for his country and his leadership,” Rodman replied.
“I’ve got to hope. I’ve got to hope that the fact that we can actually try to come have some type of happy medium around the world, especially here in America.”
