North Korea: US will pay for Nikki Haley’s ‘tongue-lashing’

North Korea declared Friday that the U.S. will “pay dearly” for United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley’s “tongue lashing” against North Korea in her calls for increased sanctions against the country, Bloomberg reports.

The North’s state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) blasted the U.S. for Haley’s “hysteric fit” in which she pushed the U.N. Security Council to ban oil sales to the country following its nuclear test last weekend.

Haley had said the aggressive regime was “begging for war” after it conducted its sixth and most powerful nuclear test to date, the detonation of a hydrogen bomb.

North Korea is attempting to mount nuclear weapons on missiles capable of reaching the U.S., and announced in August that it had successfully miniaturized a nuclear warhead to fit on such a missile.

“The U.S. administration will have to pay a dear price for her tongue-lashing,” the KCNA said of Haley, according to Bloomberg.

Haley’s calls for new sanctions come after a series of North Korean provocations over the summer, including a threat to launch missiles near the U.S. territory of Guam.

President Trump has said that military retaliation is still an option for the U.S., but will be used only as a last resort.

“I would prefer not going the route of the military, but it is something certainly that could happen,” Trump said in White House press conference this week. 

South Korea was bracing Saturday for North Korea to conduct a missile test as Pyongyang celebrated its founding anniversary. The country has a history of doing military tests on significant holidays and conducted its fifth nuclear test on its founding anniversary last year.

The U.S. announced Friday that it would call a meeting Monday to vote on a draft resolution establishing additional sanctions on North Korea.
