Selena Gomez calls on fans to defend DACA
Pop singer Selena Gomez encouraged fans on Friday to call the White House and their members of Congress to oppose President Trump’s decision to rescind the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
“My definition of a dreamer is someone that thinks big and believes anything is possible,” she said in an Instagram post.
“The wonderful people being threatened by the unfortunate reversal of DACA are exactly that. Please call The White House, your local member of Congress and state Senators to let your voice be heard to defend DACA!”
Gomez, whose father is of Mexican decent, posted the statement in response to Trump’s decision this week to end the Obama-era program for roughly 800,000 “Dreamers” in the U.S. who were brought into the country illegally as children.
DACA was put in place by the Obama administration in 2012 to shield from deportation undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as minors who had applied for work permits.
Gomez has waded into politics before, including with an outfit she wore to a Grammy Awards after-party. She wore a jean jacket that read “God Bless Nasty Women,” a reference to Trump calling Clinton a “nasty woman” in the 2016 campaign.
