‘Time’ magazine takes on the gun control debate in latest cover story

“Time” magazine is wading into the gun control debate in the wake of the Las Vegas massacre, listing recent mass shootings on its latest cover.

Las Vegas is featured most prominently on the dark background. The words “America’s nightmare” are also featured.

An animated version of the cover, posted on Twitter, shows sites of 13 mass shootings, including Columbine, San Bernardino, Sandy Hook and Washington, D.C.

“Time” magazine’s Philip Elliott, Haley Sweetland Edwards and Charlotte Alter take on the gun control debate in the cover story, “The Fight Over Gun Control Isn’t Really About Guns.”

The piece recounts Sunday night’s violence in Las Vegas, then addresses the history and future of gun control in the U.S. It asserts that the debate is not about guns, but about the values they represent: “cherished freedoms, a reverence for independence.”

“The guns are a rejection of political correctness that creeps into everything,” the piece reads. “Even the most incremental move to constrain deadly weaponry seems to many Americans to cut against their rights.”

The latest edition of the magazine comes as lawmakers are rekindling the gun control debate.

{mosads}Many Democrats have called for immediate action, and a proposal to ban “bump stocks,” an accessory that allows semi-automatic weapons to fire with increased frequency, is gaining support among GOP lawmakers.
