Trump: ‘We must not allow ISIS’ in US

President Trump said on Tuesday that the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) must be kept from entering the United States, the same day a suspected terrorist attack in New York City left at least eight people dead and 11 others injured.

“We must not allow ISIS to return, or enter, our country after defeating them in the Middle East and elsewhere. Enough!” the president tweeted after reports of the attack in lower Manhattan.

A 29-year-old man is now in custody following the incident, according to officials, though the motivation behind the attack is still unclear. Mayor Bill de Blasio in a press conference called the incident, in which a man drove a truck through a crowded bike path near the World Trade Center, “an act of terror.”

The attacker reportedly yelled “Allahu Akbar” as he got out of the truck, according to The New York Times.

“In NYC, looks like another attack by a very sick and deranged person. Law enforcement is following this closely. NOT IN THE U.S.A.!” Trump tweeted earlier, shortly after reports of the attack emerged.

The White House said the president had been briefed on the incident.

The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force is leading the investigation, but no major terror groups have yet claimed credit for the attack.
