Trump congratulates ‘Deplorables’ on 2016 election anniversary
President Trump congratulated his supporters on the Wednesday anniversary of his historic victory in the 2016 presidential election, calling them “deplorables” in a nod to his former Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton.
“Congratulations to all of the ‘DEPLORABLES’ and the millions of people who gave us a MASSIVE (304-227) Electoral College landslide victory!” Trump tweeted, touting his Electoral College victory over Clinton, who won the election’s popular vote.

Clinton said at a 2016 fundraiser gala that half of Trump’s supporters belonged in a “basket of deplorables,” whom she described as being “racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic.”
Trump supporters quickly adapted the moniker after Trump denounced her remarks as insulting to large swaths of the American people.
