Romney: Roy Moore ‘is unfit for office and should step aside’

Former GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney said Friday that Alabama Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore is “unfit for office and should step aside” following new allegations that Moore had a sexual encounter with a 14-year-old girl when he was 32 and had pursued relationships with other teenage women when he was in his mid-30s.

“Innocent until proven guilty is for criminal convictions, not elections. I believe Leigh Corfman. Her account is too serious to ignore. Moore is unfit for office and should step aside,” Romney said, backing the testimony of Corfman, now 53.

Corfman told The Washington Post that in 1979 Moore drove her to his house, where Moore took off his clothes as well as Corfman’s. Corfman said Moore then touched her over her underwear and attempted to get her to do the same to him.

{mosads}The new report also includes testimonies from three women, aged between 16 and 18 at the time, who described romantic advances by Moore. 

Romney’s comments come after more than a dozen GOP senators and the White House have urged Moore to step down if the allegations prove to be true. Moore has denied the allegations as an attack by the newspaper and Democrats ahead of the December special election for the Senate seat.
