Lena Dunham says she warned Clinton team about working with ‘rapist’ Weinstein

Actress Lena Dunham said she warned Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign in 2016 about accepting money and help from film producer Harvey Weinstein, pointing to his rumored mistreatment of women. 

Dunham, a vocal Clinton supporter, told The New York Times that she gave warnings about Weinstein to multiple Clinton aides, but her concerns seemed to go unheard.

“I just want … to let you know that Harvey’s a rapist and this is going to come out at some point,” Dunham said she told the campaign’s deputy communications director, Kristina Schake, according to the Times.

“I think it’s a really bad idea for him to host fund-raisers and be involved because it’s an open secret in Hollywood that he has a problem with sexual assault.” 

The “Girls” star told the newspaper that Schake seemed shocked, and Dunham said she also warned Adrienne Elrod, a campaign operative working on celebrity outreach, about the rumors surrounding Weinstein.

Both Schake and Elrod told the Times in a statement that Dunham had never mentioned rape in comments regarding Weinstein.

Weinstein, who prominently advocated for Clinton’s presidential bid by holding fundraisers and other public events, is now being investigated for multiple claims of sexual assault and rape.
