Former New Mexico gov: Trump’s foreign policy is getting ‘criticized by everybody’

Former New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson (D) argued Tuesday that former President Obama was a “good foreign policy president,” while knocking President Trump for being an “isolationist” and a “nationalist.”

“We were respected overseas, he opened the relationship with Cuba,” Richardson said of Obama on Fox News’s “Ingraham Angle.”

“I think he was a very good foreign policy president. And President Trump is an isolationist. He’s a nationalist. Internationally, I travel all the time, we are getting criticized by everybody.” 

Richardson served as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations under former President Clinton.

Host Laura Ingraham fired back, suggesting “European elites” are the ones criticizing Trump. The same people were critical of former President Reagan, who Ingraham said ended up being “one of the greatest presidents of all time.”

Trump has clashed with members of both major parties over his foreign policy since he took office in January.

On the Republican side, Sens. Bob Corker (Tenn.) and John McCain (Ariz.) have been openly critical of Trump.

Corker said in October that the president has not yet demonstrated “the stability nor some of the competence” to be successful, while McCain in an October speech railed against “spurious nationalism.”

And Democratic Sen. Ben Cardin (Md.) has said Congress is taking a more active role in addressing foreign policy in North Korea, where Trump has mocked leader Kim Jong Un.

Trump last week drew criticism after feuding with British Prime Minister Theresa May after he shared anti-Muslim videos from a far-right British leader.
