Trevor Noah: Franken would still have a job if he was a Republican

Late night host Trevor Noah responded to Minnesota Sen. Al Franken’s (D) resignation Thursday, saying that Franken would not have resigned over sexual misconduct allegations if he was a Republican.

Noah said that he thought Franken said “what many people were thinking” in his speech on the Senate floor.

The “Daily Show” host went on to play a clip of Franken’s speech, in which the Minnesota Democrat ripped the GOP for its “full support” of controversial Alabama GOP Senate candidate Roy Moore and President Trump, both of whom have been accused by multiple women of sexual misconduct.

“Regardless of how you feel about Al Franken, he does have a point,” Noah said. “The Democrats are draining their swamp while Republicans are installing a jungle gym in Roy Moore’s new office.”

Franken resigned in a speech on the Senate floor Thursday following accusations from eight women of sexual misconduct. In his speech, Franken blasted the Republicans for supposed hypocrisy over similar accusations in their own party.

“I of all people am aware that there is some irony in the fact that I am leaving, while a man who has bragged on tape about his history of sexual assault sits in the Oval Office and a man who has repeatedly preyed on young girls campaigns for the Senate with the full support of his party,” Franken said.

Noah went on to say that Franken would still have the full support of his party if he was a member of the Republican Party. 

“Because if Al Franken was a Republican, for better or for worse, he’d still have his job,” Noah said. “He was just in the wrong party. Like a dude who shows up at a wedding wearing a toga: Wrong party.”

“Or the guy who brings Cranium to the orgy,” Noah joked. “Wrong party.”
