San Francisco mayor dies at 65

Ed Lee, mayor of San Francisco, died on Tuesday at the age of 65, CBS San Francisco reported.

London Breed, the president of the city’s Board of Supervisors, will now serve as acting mayor.

“It is with profound sadness and terrible grief that we confirm that Mayor Edwin M. Lee passed away,” city officials said in a statement reported by CBS. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Anita, his two daughters, Brianna and Tania, and his family.”

A press release reported by the news outlet said Lee died at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital at 1:11 a.m.{mosads}

Willie Brown, a former San Francisco mayor who is also friends with Lee, told CBS that Lee collapsed while grocery shopping on Monday night and was sent to the hospital.

Lee, San Francisco’s first Asian-American mayor, was appointed to the position after Gavin Newsom left the post to serve as the state’s lieutenant governor. Lee subsequently won two elections.

“I don’t know San Francisco without Ed Lee,” Brown told CBS.

“He was a part of everything. He was the human rights director. He was head of purchasing during my administration. He was head of public works. He became the CAO [chief administrative officer] for the city … I just can’t imagine the city without Ed Lee.”

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) expressed her condolences with a statement.

“Early this morning I learned of Ed Lee’s death,” she said in a statement. “It’s a very sad day for San Francisco and all of us who knew Ed. My thoughts turn to all of Ed’s family, especially Anita, Brianna and Tania. I know what this is like and wish I could give Anita a hug and express my sorrow.”

Many other prominent politicians expressed condolences as well, including New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (D), Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) and Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.).
