Americans among tourists in deadly Mexican bus crash

American citizens were onboard a tourist bus that crashed in Mexico on Tuesday, killing at least 12 people and injuring more than a dozen others, Reuters reported.

The bus, which was heading to a Mayan ruin in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo on the Yucatan Peninsula, lost control and swerved off the road, according to the news agency.

All 18 injured were sent to local hospitals, the state government said in a statement.

Five people have been released, while the remaining injured are in stable condition, according to Reuters.

The bus was carrying 31 passengers, including citizens from Sweden and Brazil in addition to the U.S. The state’s government said its Secretariat of Tourism is working to communicate with the families of those killed or injured, and that it is investigating the cause of the crash.

The tourists had recently traveled on a cruise ship, the bus tour’s company said, according to Reuters.
