Former GOP senator: Trump ‘not a complex man’

Former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) on Sunday said that it’s no surprise that President Trump has been driven to push the conservative agenda, noting that the president “is not a complex man.”

“The Japanese, for example, have figured out how to deal with President Trump. You compliment him, you flatter him, you work with him behind the scenes, you don’t take a stand against him publicly. There’s something to this,” CNN’s Jake Tapper said on “State of the Union.”

“Yeah, look, Donald Trump is not a complex man. I think that’s fairly certain,” Santorum said.

{mosads}Santorum criticized Democratic Party leaders for failing to work with Trump, saying they “have gone out and driven Donald Trump into the arms of Republicans and conservatives.”

“It’s because he’s getting no quarter from the Democrats. The Democrats are just going after him hammer and tong, and he has no choice but to go and drive the conservative agenda,” Santorum said.

Santorum praised Trump for cutting regulations that he said reflected a conservative agenda.

Santorum, who ran unsuccessful presidential campaigns for the Republican nomination in 2012 and 2016, has previously been critical of Trump. He blamed Trump for Democratic electoral victories in November, and said the president’s “personal antics” have overshadowed his administration’s accomplishments.
