ACLU to spend $25 million in 2018 elections: report

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is set to spend $25 million on the 2018 elections, according to a new report.

The $25 million will go toward supporting ballot items and hot-button political issues, such as the group’s current effort in Florida to allow convicted felons to vote. 

In the first year after President Trump’s historic win, the ACLU raised $93 million, after raising just $5.5 million in the previous year, Politico reported Saturday. The civil rights group now aims to take on Trump and Republicans by funding key races across the country.

The nonprofit group is expected to be directly involved in about a dozen races in 2018, in an attempt to flip control of both state governorships and House seats as Democrats aim to win back a majority in the lower chamber. 

The ACLU has not said it will back Democrats exclusively in the races, and cannot legally endorse individual candidates for office. 

In line with its history as a civil rights defender, the ACLU will aim to challenge voting rights and immigration issues.

The ACLU took credit this week for helping to end Trump’s voter integrity commission, calling it a “charade” and accusing the administration of trying to make it harder for people to vote.
