Trump to host Kazakhstan president at White House next week

President Trump will meet with Nursultan Nazarbayev, the president of Kazakhstan, next week to discuss economic and security issues, the White House announced Tuesday.

“President Trump and President Nazarbayev will discuss ways to strengthen and enhance our strategic partnership on regional security issues and economic cooperation,” the statement said.

The visit will be Nazarbayev’s first since Trump took office last year.

Nazarbayev has served as president since 1990. Under him, the country has been accused of committing human rights violations and cracking down on political opposition.

The two leaders are set to discuss several pressing international issues such as the conflict in Afghanistan, which Kazakhstan must address as the current head of the United Nations Security Council.

Trump and Nazarbayev will also address nuclear nonproliferation issues, the White House said. The leaders previously met at the Arab Islamic American Summit in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in May along with Middle Eastern national leaders.
