Trevor Noah: trade war ‘least bad option’ out of wars we thought Trump could start

Comedy Central host Trevor Noah joked Monday that, of all the wars that President Trump could have started while in office, a trade war is “the least bad option.”

“Even if it’s bad policy, America could be headed for a trade war, which, to be honest, of all the wars we thought Trump could get us into — I mean nuclear war, race war — a trade war is like the least bad option,” Noah said on “The Daily Show.”

Trump announced last week that he would impose tariffs of 25 percent on imported steel and 10 percent on imported aluminum in an effort to bolster domestic industries.

The tariffs have been roundly condemned by many Republicans, prompting threats of retaliation by major trading partners, including the European Union (EU) and Canada.

“You would think Trump getting all these bad Yelp reviews on his tariff idea would make him think twice, but joke’s on you, he doesn’t think once,” Noah said of Trump’s response to the EU’s threats and assurance that trade wars are “good, and easy to win.”

Trump has since said that he doesn’t think the tariffs will trigger a trade war, while Republicans in Congress are considering intervention to stop a tax that many believe will hurt working families and consumers.
