Rep. Jim Himes (D-Conn.) on Tuesday said that for President Trump to call the special counsel’s investigation into his campaign a “witch hunt” is “to be completely unhinged” from reality.
Himes blasted Trump’s dismissal of the FBI’s raid of his personal lawyer Michael Cohen’s office on Monday, when the president again called the Russia investigation a “witch hunt” and suggested he could still fire special counsel Robert Mueller.
“Let’s start with the facts … Of course the facts are that the investigation has secured two guilty pleas, and close to two dozen indictments,” Himes said of the former Trump associates and Russian nationals separately charged with crimes in the investigation.

“To say this is a witch hunt, to say that they’ve found nothing is to be completely unhinged, to be completely at odds with reality,” the congressman said on CNN.
The FBI raid does not appear to be directly related to Mueller’s investigation and was authorized in order to obtain documents related to the attorney’s payoff of an adult-film star who alleges she had an affair with Trump.
Agents obtained documents and communications between Trump and Cohen related to the $130,000 payment to porn star Stormy Daniels as part of a nondisclosure agreement.
Both Trump and the lawyer have said the president did not know about the payment, which was dispersed just days before the 2016 election.
Himes, a frequent critic of the president and a member of the House Intelligence Committee that previously investigated Russian meddling in the election, also noted that it was the office of a Trump appointee, U.S. Attorney of the Southern District of New York Geoffrey Berman, which authorized the FBI’s search warrant.
