Colbert mocks ‘lyin’ Comey’ attack: ‘Trump already used that name on Ted Cruz’

Late-night host Stephen Colbert on Friday night mocked the Republican National Committee (RNC) for dubbing former FBI Director James Comey as “Lyin’ Comey,” noting President Trump has used a similar nickname before for a political rival.

“Wait, you can’t call him ‘Lyin Comey!’” Colbert remarked on his show.

“Trump already used that name on Ted Cruz! He’s ‘Lyin Ted!’ I’m gonna start calling him ‘Repeatin Don.’ ”

Trump, who used the similar nickname for Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), who ran against him in the 2016 Republican presidential primary, unleashed a barrage of attacks on Comey this week as excerpts from the former FBI chief’s new book surfaced.

The White House is backing a plan by the RNC to publicly undermine Comey ahead of the book’s release on Tuesday.

Comey told Congress that after Trump fired him in May, the president asked him to stop investigating his former national security adviser for collusion with Russia.

The RNC’s advertising plan will push the “Lyin’ Comey” nickname on a new website and a series of digital advertisements, while instructing lawmakers to call out the former director for his “attempts to smear the Trump administration.”
