House GOP committee chairmen rip Comey over memos

A trio of GOP House committee chairmen late Thursday blasted former FBI James Comey for the contents of his memos he authored after his meetings with President Trump.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.), House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) and House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) had fought for access to the memos as part of a probe into potential bias within the FBI and Justice Department.

{mosads}Goodlatte, Gowdy and Nunes wrote that the memos, which were made public Thursday, portray Comey as self-centered and vindicate the president from the suspicion he sought to stop the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

“(Comey) was willing to work for someone he deemed morally unsuited for office, capable of lying, requiring of personal loyalty, worthy of impeachment, and sharing the traits of a mob boss,” the congressmen said in a statement.

“Former Director Comey was willing to overlook all of the aforementioned characteristics in order to keep his job,” they continued. “In his eyes, the real crime was his own firing.” 

The congressmen also argued that Comey did not create memos for his conversations with former President Obama or members of his cabinet, which they claim revealed Comey “has at least two different standards in his interactions with others.”

The release of the memos coincides with a series of media appearances Comey is making for the release of his new book. Trump fired Comey last May.
