Lewandowski: Stormy Daniels’s attorney has spent more time on TV than litigating case

Former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski on Thursday downplayed recent revelations about President Trump’s legal involvement with Stormy Daniels, saying her attorney is trying his client’s case “in the court of public opinion.” 

Lewandowski was responding to the revelation that Trump reimbursed his attorney, Michael Cohen, for a “hush money” payment to the adult-film star who goes by the stage name Stormy Daniels. 

“That is not a newsworthy event, but this is what Stormy Daniels wants to make a newsworthy event,” he said on Fox News. “This is standard operating procedure for most people who deal with their attorneys.”

“That attorney has spent more time on television that he has litigating his own client’s case,” Lewandowski said of Daniels’s attorney, Michael Avenatti.

Trump’s allies have periodically criticized Avenatti for his frequent cable television appearances. Earlier Thursday, Rudy Giuliani called Avenatti an “ambulance chaser.”

Giuliani, who is representing Trump in the probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election, told Fox News on Wednesday night that Trump paid Cohen back $130,000 that was given to Daniels as part of a nondisclosure agreement.

The Giuliani statement rocked Washington, as it stood in contrast with Trump’s previous denial that he knew anything about the payment.

Avenatti has argued that Americans should be “outraged” by the revelation that Trump lied about the payment. He also fired back at Giuliani on Twitter, saying the former New York City mayor is leading a “desperate attempt to save the presidency.”

However, Lewandowski suggested there was nothing out of the ordinary about what Giuliani said Wednesday night, and went on to praise him for what he brings to Trump’s legal team.

“What Mayor Giuliani revealed last night was that Mr. Trump, as a private citizen, had a contractual relationship with his attorney and paid him a series of payments over a stated period of time every month,” Lewandowski said Thursday.
