Charlottesville counterprotesters get married

A couple who found themselves at the center of the violence during last year’s violent white supremacist rally in Chalottesville, Va., got married last weekend.

The New York Times reported that Marcus Martin and Marissa Blair got married last Saturday in Reva, Va. Martin was injured at last August’s “Unite the Right” rally when a car drove into a crowd of counterprotesters. 

The Times reported that the couple were both in the path of the car, but Martin pushed Blair out of the car’s way and took the car’s impact himself, going airborne and breaking his lower leg and ankle.

The two were friends with Heather Heyer, who died in the incident. They honored her at the wedding by featuring Heyer’s favorite color — purple — prominently during the ceremony.

Last year’s rally, organized to protest the removal of a statue of Robert E. Lee, turned violent when white nationalists who organized the event clashed with counterprotesters.

President Trump drew widespread criticism from Republican and Democratic lawmakers when he claimed that “both sides” were to blame for violence at the rally.
