Marine found guilty at court martial of attacking protestor at Charlottesville rally

A marine who marched alongside neo-Nazis last August in the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Va., has been found guilty in a summary court-martial after he reportedly bragged about participating in the violence that occurred during the march, ABC News reported.

Lance Cpl. Vasillios Pistolis on Monday was convicted on charges of failing to obey an order of regulation and making a false official statement under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, the 2nd Marine Logistics Group told ABC News.

{mosads}The marine was sentenced to 28 days of confinement, was demoted two ranks and will lose two-thirds of a month’s pay, ABC News reported.

Pistolis belonged to a white supremacist group and had bragged online about participating the violence that erupted during the Charlottesville march, ProPublica first reported.

He now has seven days to request clemency to the convening officer, according to the Marines.

The Unite the Right rally was a two-day event scheduled in August to oppose the removal of a Robert E. Lee statue and bring together the white nationalist movement.

The march gained notoriety for the racist nature of the protesters and then for the violence that erupted between protesters and counterprotesters.

On the second day, a man linked with white supremacist groups rammed his car into a crowd of counterprotesters, killing one person and injuring 19.
