An image posted on social media of two young female activists posing for a picture with an Italian politician while kissing has gone viral.

The image of Gaia Parisi and Matilde Rizzo kissing during a picture with Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini when he visited their hometown recently was posted on Instagram last week by Parisi and garnered more than 30,000 likes. The kiss was meant to protest Salvini’s attendance at a the anti-LGBT World Congress of Families event in Verona, Italy.

CNN reports the two women, who are friends and not a couple, initially asked Salvini for a picture before surprising him with the kiss.

{mosads}Parisi told CNN the image was meant to send a message of love and tolerance against the language and the attitude of hatred that politicians like Matteo Salvini keep spreading.”

The two women said security separated them after they kissed for the photo.

“We decided to use all the means at our disposal to protest peacefully, to be able to send our message through the platforms that unfortunately, today, seems to be the main platforms by which our ministers communicate with citizens,” Parisi told CNN about why they posted the image on Instagram.

Salvini appeared to take the picture in stride, posting it on his own Instagram profile with a caption reading: “Best wishes, peace and good, sisters.”
