Man sets fire to anime studio in Japan, killing 33 people

Thirty-three people are confirmed dead after a man set an anime studio in Japan on fire Thursday, The Associated Press reported.

The suspect, identified only a 41-year-old man who did not work for the studio, reportedly screamed “You die!” as he entered the Kyoto Animation studio.

In addition to the 33 dead, another 36 were injured, some of them critically, per AP.

The fire is the deadliest in Japan in almost two decades. In 2001, a fire in Tokyo’s congested Kabukicho entertainment district killed 44 people.

Kyoto Animation is a popular anime outlet with hits like “Lucky Star,” ″K-On!” and “Haruhi Suzumiya.”
