U-Haul to screen new employees for nicotine use
In multiple states, U-Haul will no longer hire employees who use nicotine, a move the company said Thursday will encourage a “healthier workforce.”
The moving and storage company’s policy change will go into effect Feb. 1 in 21 states.
“Nicotine products are addictive and pose a variety of serious health risks,” U-Haul chief of staff Jessica Lopez said in a statement. “This policy is a responsible step in fostering a culture of wellness at U-Haul, with the goal of helping our Team Members on their health journey.”
The rule will go into effect in Arizona, Alaska, Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia and Washington.
The nicotine-free policy will not apply to employees hired before Feb. 1.
Under the change, applicants in the 21 states will be questioned about nicotine use. In states where testing is allowed, applicants must also consent to submit nicotine screening, U-Haul said.
