Axelrod: Whatever Obama does on Syria, there will be critics

{mosads}Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) told CNN on Thursday that the president should not launch a military attack “unless they know that they’ve got the full weight of our political leadership behind them, and the American public supports the mission.” 

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) said the conflict in Syria “has no clear national security connection to the United States and victory by either side will not necessarily bring in to power people friendly to the United States” in a statement released Wednesday.

But other lawmakers have blasted the president for not doing more to intervene.

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) has said the type of limited military strike reportedly under consideration by the Obama administration wouldn’t do enough to deter Assad from using chemical weapons again.

“They might do a strike and say, ‘See we punished them,’ but it won’t change the equation. I would expect Assad to continue to use these weapons,” McCain told The Daily Beast. “And other Assads around the world will now not hesitate to use these weapons and sooner or later they may be used against Americans.”
