A group of 14 congressional Republicans won’t back John McCain, according to the story in The Hill that also leads the Post on Thursday morning. The congressmen oppose McCain on various grounds, but several of them have been prominent war critics, including Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-Neb.) and Rep. Walter Jones (R-N.C.), the story notes. In the blog, Bob Cesca writes that President Bush, who has voiced regret over the tone of his foreign policy, wasn’t unabashed about using the war to get himself elected. After all, he called himself the “war president” in one interview before the 2004 race, Cesca notes.
