John McCain, behind in the polls, needed Barack Obama to make a gaffe at Wednesday’s debate, and Obama did not, writes Jonathan Singer. McCain, however, hurt himself by coming across like Vice President Al Gore did during a presidential debate in 2000 in which sighed and appeared generally condescending toward his debate opponent, George W. Bush, writes Singer. Two of the night’s most awkward moments came when McCain used finger quotes to refer to the “health of the mother” during the abortion discussion and when he stuck his tongue out when he was confused over how to exit the stage and greet Michelle Obama, writes Todd Beeton.
