John McCain’s strategy of attacking Barack Obama’s character has backfired, as a new CBS/New York Times survey shows that his favorability rating is just 41 percent, writes Steve Benen. Columnist Michael Gerson’s argument that McCain’s campaign would have been fine if it wasn’t for the financial crisis is “bizarre,” since it fails to account for the McCain campaign’s lack of substance and McCain’s poor performance in the debates, writes Benen.
