John McCain, a former media darling now facing press criticism for false statements, has finally obtained the affection of his party’s grassroots by challenging the media’s “self-appointed role as arbiter of what ‘matters,'” writes Carol Platt Liebau. McCain may also be taking heat from Barack Obama for his remark that the “fundamentals of the economy are strong,” but two other prominent economic observers, CNBC’s Erin Burnett and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, have made similar statements, writes Matt Lewis.
