Barack Obama’s remark that he’s impressed with German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s understanding of the Iraqi situation comes across as patronizing to Carol Platt Liebau, who recalls when Obama called a female reporter “sweetie” and suggested that supporters of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) “get over” her loss in the primaries. John McCain could excite conservative voters by choosing Govs. Sarah Palin (R-Alaska) or Bobby Jindal (R-La.) as his running mate, but he would disappoint many of them by picking Gov.
